Vitamin D (Fertility)
A fat-soluble vitamin whose deficiency is associated with reduced IVF success and hormonal imbalances.
Vitamin D receptors are found in ovarian cells, sperm, and endometrial tissue. Observational studies suggest that women with adequate vitamin D levels (25-OH-D >30 ng/mL) may have higher IVF pregnancy rates than those who are deficient. Low vitamin D is also associated with PCOS severity and poorer endometrial function.
In men, deficiency correlates with lower sperm motility and morphology in some studies. Optimal levels for fertility are debated, but most specialists recommend correcting frank deficiency before or during treatment.
Supplementation is safe, inexpensive, and widely available. A blood test for 25-hydroxyvitamin D is simple to add to a pre-treatment workup.
