Procedure
Embryo Transfer
The procedure in which one or more embryos are placed into the uterus via a soft catheter.
Embryo transfer (ET) is the final step of an IVF cycle. Under ultrasound guidance, a physician passes a thin, flexible catheter through the cervix and deposits the embryo(s) into the uterine cavity. The procedure takes only a few minutes and rarely requires anesthesia.
Transfers can be "fresh" (3–6 days after retrieval) or "frozen" (FET), where previously vitrified embryos are warmed and transferred in a separate cycle. Most clinics now prefer FET because the uterine lining is undisturbed by stimulation hormones. Single embryo transfer (SET) is standard practice to minimize twin risk.
