Anovulation
A menstrual cycle in which no egg is released from the ovary.
Ovulation is required for natural conception. When a follicle fails to rupture and release an egg, the cycle is anovulatory. Women may still have bleeding, making it easy to miss. Chronic anovulation is a leading cause of female infertility and is most commonly associated with PCOS, thyroid disorders, hyperprolactinemia, or low body weight.
Diagnosis involves tracking basal body temperature, using LH predictor kits, or measuring a mid-luteal progesterone level. Treatment depends on the cause and may include clomiphene, letrozole, or gonadotropins to trigger ovulation.
