Diagnosis
Asherman's Syndrome
Intrauterine adhesions or scar tissue that can cause infertility and recurrent miscarriage.
Asherman's syndrome occurs when scar tissue forms inside the uterine cavity, most often after a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure following a miscarriage or delivery. The adhesions can partially or completely obstruct the cavity, preventing embryo implantation and causing abnormal or absent periods.
Diagnosis is confirmed by hysteroscopy or a saline infusion sonogram. Treatment is hysteroscopic lysis (cutting) of adhesions, sometimes followed by estrogen therapy and placement of a balloon or IUD to prevent re-scarring while the endometrium heals.
